They’re Not Just for S’Mores! Making Marshmallow Pops for Kids

Looking for a kid-pleasing alternative to cupcakes for your next birthday party?  Hoping to find a teacher-approved treat for an in-school celebration?  Need a delicious, high-energy snack that can be easily transported to the field and served to little athletes on the run?  Colorful marshmallow pops are a simple, fun treat that parents and kids can make together and serve to friends for almost any occasion.

What You Need:

•    Double boiler or microwavable bowl
•    Large marshmallows—at least one per person
•    Melting chocolate—choose from a variety of colors, available in most craft and grocery store baking aisles
•    Lollipop sticks
•    Candy Cups—think mini cupcake wrappers, available in paper or foil

Optional:

Colorful sprinkles
Mini chocolate candies
Chocolate or graham cookie crumbs
Small treat bags

Directions:

1.    In a double boiler (preferred) or microwavable bowl, melt the chocolate according to the directions on the bag.  The chocolate will need to stay liquid throughout the process.

2.    Dip just the tip of each lollipop stick into the melted chocolate, then insert the stick about halfway through each marshmallow.

3.    Once the sticks have “set,” dip the entire marshmallow into the melted chocolate.  Remove right away, wiping any excess chocolate back into the pan or bowl.

4.    Immediately add sprinkles, mini chocolate candies, cookie crumbs or other “decoration,” then set the pop down into the candy cup, so that the stick is standing straight up.

5.    For transporting or gift purposes, you may want to wrap each pop in a small treat bag, tied with colorful, curly ribbon.  Be sure to wait until the chocolate has hardened completely before wrapping the treats.

Extra Fun:

The possibilities for creativity and design are endless with marshmallow pops. Here are a few fun ideas:

•    For Halloween, try using orange chocolates with black (or bat) sprinkles

•    Red and green chocolates are great at Christmas time.

•    Alternate red, white and blue pops on Memorial Day and the 4th of July.

•    Team colors work great for sports celebrations

•    Show school spirit with the colors of your kid’s school

•    Pink and/or blue pops are winning favors at baby showers

•    For bigger kids, put two marshmallows on one stick

•    Create a personal message by adding your own small letter flags on each pop.  For my daughter’s birthday, I arranged the pops to say HAPPY 7TH BIRTHDAY!

Marshmallow pops are a can’t-miss, no-mess treat for kids at parties, in school, at the field, and on the go!  Enjoy making this treat alongside your child or surprising her with your own delicious and colorful creation!

I tried doing this with cake (cake pops like Bakerella), but it was a massive failure! I think marshmallows look way easier. Nice idea.
